We went kayaking yesterday among the mangrove islands in the Indian River Lagoon. The islands are a favorite nesting spot for the Brown Pelican. I think if I were a bird, I might be a Brown Pelican. I can relate to their extreme clumsiness. Unlike other more graceful water birds, Pelican make a clumsy splash landing in the water as they dive head first for fish. I have read that they also sometimes crash land in their flimsy stick nests in the mangroves that often need to be rebuilt.

Hey! I object!
For one thing I love you just the way you are. Clumsy is underrated. Oops is a lovely word.
And as for that crash landing: I’ll never forget the thrill of snorkeling along and being terrified/amazed by a pelican crashing in just a few feet in front of me, fully vertical, and then making that spin to fill its bill with fish. On its way up it tilted its forehead forward to let the water drain out the sides. As I remember it— admittedly I was stunned— the bird tilted the bill upward at the surface and slid the fish down its throat. Sometimes they haul the catch back to the nest. That’s what you would do, Karen, so you’d make an excellent pelican😉❤️.
